Finding the right psychedelic facilitator for yourself can feel overwhelming. What should I ask? How do I know I’ll be safe? How do I know this experience will actually be helpful?
These are all important questions.
I’d start by looking for someone with verifiable credentials and experience—both as a therapist or mental health professional, when appropriate, and as a psychedelic facilitator. Ask about their training, experience, and what qualifies them to do this work.
I’d also want to know whether this person has personal experience with psychedelics and whether they’re comfortable talking honestly about their own experiences. A facilitator doesn’t need to have had the same experiences you will have, but having some firsthand understanding of the psychedelic experience can bring an important depth of empathy and perspective.
Pay attention to how they talk about the work. Be wary of overpromising. No ethical facilitator can guarantee a particular outcome or tell you exactly what your experience will be. Notice whether their humility is present—or whether their ego seems to be front and center.
A good facilitator should also be willing to talk openly about contraindications and risks, how they determine whether someone is ready for psychedelic work, and what they do when someone isn’t a good candidate. Ask about their philosophy around preparation, what happens during the experience, and how they approach integration afterward.
And don’t be afraid to ask the harder questions: How do you handle an emergency? What happens if someone has a difficult or unexpected experience? Have you experienced adverse events, and what did you learn from them?
Most importantly, pay attention to how you feel with this person.
Are you being pressured to commit, or do you feel like you have the space to make an informed decision? Do you feel more grounded and empowered after talking with them—or more swept up in their certainty about what psychedelics can do?
In the end, trust your gut.
Choose someone you feel open to and comfortable with. Look for someone with humble confidence and a quiet steadiness. Psychedelic experiences can bring enormous emotion, uncertainty, vulnerability, and sometimes the unexpected. You want someone who can stay present and grounded when things get big—someone who isn’t easily thrown by what emerges.
This is a significant experience. Who you choose to sit with matters.
